Start where you are.

Back in the winter of 2018, I found myself completely overwhelmed with my financial situation. I had around $22,000 in credit card debt (at that point, don’t even ask me what my student loans were looking like) and had no clue how to get out of it. That’s when I was introduced to the debt-free community by a friend.

I loved aspects about the community but one thing that kept bugging me was that so many of the leading voices were so different from mine, and by different I mean old, White and male. If you haven’t noticed already, I am a Black woman and it affects every part of my life so how I approach finances is going to be a bit different.

Months later, I remember listening to a podcast where the host was basically shaming folks if the products in their hair care routine total more than $15. Now, for anyone that has taken a walk down the Black hair care aisle in Target know’s that’s not possible or realistic, I mean, my favorite gel alone, already puts me at $22! That was the moment that I decided to document my relationship with money, first on Instagram and now here on the blog.

I’m not a guru, but I have paid off $27, 000 and am half-way there to being debt free. I’m happy to share with you how I got there. If you are looking for someone to scream at you saying you need to live on rice and beans, I’m not the girl for you. I believe life is too short to live like that and sometimes a girl just wants a crab leg! I think that you can live for less on a budget while having a full life. I plan on doing just that, I hope you follow along on my journey.
